WILLPOWER IS OVERRATED! THE REAL SCIENCE-BASED SECRET TO SUCCESS
If I were to ask what was the most important characteristic for overcoming procrastination, for persistence, and for long-term achievement and success, most people would answer this question by saying it is willpower.
That would not be unusual, but it would be wrong. Willpower is vastly overrated as the leading trait exhibited and used by success-minded achievers. If fact, if we keep this discussion on a scientific level, willpower cannot possibly be responsible or take credit for more than one-sixth of anyone’s success. In layman’s terms the real secret to success is your imagination and your ability to visualize success.
This powerful trait is responsible for five-sixths of every great achievement. Past, present, or future!
For example, suppose that you have set a goal or resolution to lose 10 pounds. You are absolutely determined to be 10 pounds lighter by New Year’s Day! You are using your willpower to prove that you are stronger and more powerful than those extra cookies and calories. So you say to yourself, “I will not overeat... I will not overeat...I will not overeat. You repeat this to yourself over and over again, using your willpower.
But all the time you are consciously saying this, your imagination is visualizing how great those cookies smell, and telling you how great those cookies will taste. Sooner or later you will grab those cookies or extra calories and chug them down. Why? Well the psychologists like to put it this way. Whenever you have a conflict between your willpower and your imagination, whenever they are pulling in opposite directions, your imagination will ALWAYS win!
But if your willpower and imagination are working together, pulling toward the SAME goal, this will create an all-powerful force that is impossible to overcome, and success is always the inevitable result. Now this sounds great and all, but how and why does this work scientifically? Boy am I glad you asked! Most sources of self-help like to tell us “what” we should do. But very few ever tell us “how and why” some things works. To me this is the real key to success. KNOWLEDGE! If you don’t KNOW you can, you probably won’t!
As most of you know, tremendous, revolutionary neuroscience discoveries about how the brain works have been made in just the last few years. And in that research lays the proof of the above theory and how you can put this to use in your life to overcome procrastination and bad habits, and to reach transcendent levels of success. While using a PET scanner to verify that indeed most people solve math problems by using the left side of the brain, neuroscientists made a startling discovery. A PET scanner is a relatively new piece of scientific equipment used to take a scan of a human brain much thinner than a single human hair. The subjects are injected with a very small amount of radioactive isotopes into their bloodstream. Then they are placed in a PET scanner, where a huge electromagnetic device passes a very, very thin electromagnetic field through the subject’s brain. The part of the brain that is being used by that person at the time they are being scanned, will have excess amounts of blood flowing to it, which will show up on the PET scan image, due to the presence of the radioactivity. And sure enough in the experiment where they were looking to see what part of the brain is used to solve most math functions, each of the subjects bran scan lit up in a similar area of their left-brain. But something else occurred that the scientists had not predicted, nor had been looking for. The brain scan of each experiment subject also lit up in 5 other areas of their brain!
This was a startling discovery in that it verified that our brain is constantly “thinking” on six levels. They did other tests similar to the math function test. The experiment subjects were given a math problem to solve and a sedative that was slowly increased in dosage while they were in the scanner, until such time as they fell asleep. What happened? The light in the scan image for where they were doing the math problem in the brain WENT OUT! But the other five areas of the brain scan that were lit up, stayed lit. And each subject had this light in different areas of their brain. No two subject’s scans were similar.
CONCLUSION? In your brain you are constantly thinking on 6 levels at once. Only one of these levels, the conscious level, are you aware of your thoughts, thinking and ideas. The other five areas are known as your nonconscious brain or what used to be called the subconscious brain. But this term has fallen out of favor among scientists because it has, in the past, had psych-voodoo type connotations to it. And we’re talking cognitive science here and not voodoo! When the scan-light went out for the conscious thinking and math problem-solving, as each subject feel asleep, all of the other areas stayed lit. This means that you are always thinking on your nonconscious levels. No-matter that we may be consciously asleep. Our imagination and powers of visualization reside in our nonconscious brain. Our willpower resides in our conscious brain. Our conscious brain represents one-sixth of our brain’s thinking and one-sixth of our brain’s power. Our nonconscious brain represents five-sixths of our brain’s thinking and five-sixth of our brain’s power.
Do you now know which part of your brain is most important to control? Which is bigger, and more powerful: one-sixth or five-sixths? (boy I hope you were good at math!) That’s right! Your nonconscious brain is the seat of tremendous power! Five times as great as your conscious brain. Therefore anytime you have a conflict between your willpower, which functions in your conscious brain (1/6), and your imagination, which functions in your nonconscious brain cells (5/6), who is ALWAYS gonna win? Yep! Your visualization and imagination of the smell and taste of those cookies...every time! So what can you do to fix this?
Well there is another scientific principle involved here. Our mind sees only in pictures. If I were to ask you to close your eyes and remember what you did during the first fifteen minutes after you got up this morning, you would see this in pictures. You would not see this written on a page of notebook paper in your brain! This is very important. Your conscious brain can see things and think things through and filter out negative pictures and give thoughts(mind-pictures) true meaning or perception. Because you are aware of what you think consciously you are able to do this. But what about nonconscious thoughts? We CANNOT filter out the negatives from our nonconscious thoughts because we aren’t even consciously aware of what that thinking (picture) is! So when we say to ourselves “I will not overeat!” Our conscious brain (1/6) can give this true meaning, but our nonconscious brain (5/6) sees only a beautiful picture of, “I Overeat!” “I Overeat”! And boy does your noncon listen to you!! It is not at all uncommon for people who want to lose weight by dieting to actually gain weight!
SOLUTION: So how the heck do we solve this problem? Well, now that you know the scientific basis, it’s easy. Do the math! You’ve got to get your nonconscious brain, 5/6 of your power, in line with your conscious-willpower brain, 1/6 of your power. You must use your imagination to dream up or visualize all of the benefits you can possibly gain by losing ten pounds and bombard your nonconscious brain with these pictures so that your entire brain is working toward the same end. Instead of saying “I will not overeat!”, say, “I am fit, healthy, and thin!” Start seeing yourself doing the things you can do after you lose weight. Start visualizing every single benefit of that goal. Then your entire brain is working in the same direction. And no matter what your goal is, weight-loss or other great goals, your success will be automatically guaranteed.
You won’t need willpower anymore. Your brain, after about thirty days of imagining and visualizing your success, will have created enough new neurode connections so that your brain will AUTOMATICALLY take the steps necessary to reach your goals! You won’t have to! Willpower is overrated. Oh, it’s still important. You need to use it to make the initial decision to change. But once that decision to change is made with willpower, use your imagination in your nonconscious brain to make that willpower decision stick, permanently! Procrastination will disappear, persistence and long term success and achievement will take its place. Ain’t a thing you can do to stop it. Your brain will be programmed for Success.
